Summer VISTA – Program Associate (full-time 10 weeks)

Start date: 6/10/19     End date: 8/18/19

Architreasures is seeking 4 VISTA Program Associates to support our summer programs within affordable housing sites in Chicago. Architreasures’ summer programs provide on-site arts making workshops for youth living in subsidized housing and engages families in creative space improvement projects that beautify and improve their neighborhoods.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out outreach within housing developments to enroll youth in workshops

• Provide parents and guardians assistance with program application, ensuring completion and accuracy of information

• Assist program instructors with preparation of weekly workshops and related field trips

• Develop games and group activities to support bonding and teamwork for participants

• Serve as liaison to parents/guardians and property management staff as needed

• Provide mentorship and support to youth participants during programs as needed

• Collect and organize program applications, parent/guardian releases, and daily workshop attendance sheets

• Coordinate daily workshop supplies and room prep

• Complete weekly reports summarizing workshop activities and projects

• Assist with administration of program surveys to participants and community residents

• Serve as on-site photographer to document program activities.

Qualifications

• HS graduate, must be 18 yrs+

• Interest and / or experience with youth arts programs

• Should be highly energetic, creative, and excited to teach and engage young people in hands-on arts and design projects

• Must have excellent rapport with middle school and high school aged youth and be able to serve as guide and mentor

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Knowledge and / or experience working within affordable housing communities a plus.

Benefits
This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois. As such, the position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate positions receive a biweekly living allowance of $542.22 and the option of an end-of-service education award of $1,289 or a $345 cash stipend.
